This Is The Only Cheap CNC Router You’ll Ever Need

Looking for a cheap CNC router? I have the perfect solution for you, and I’m going to tell you about it in this article.

First, let’s establish what exactly a CNC router is.

A computer numerically controlled (CNC) router is a device that performs all the tasks of a manually-operated router but can be pre-programmed and controlled by computers.

CNC routers let woodworkers design any object or component with easily-operable software. The operator needs to work on three different types of axes simultaneously; this in turn helps them to create 3D designs with intricate patterns and massive depth.

These machines can be used 24/7 and they only need to be turned off for occasional maintenance. Here’s a more detailed insight on how they work:

What are CNC routers all about?

CNC routers can be pre-programmed with designs and carry out projects of any complexity on demand. The most interesting thing about them is the fact that they manufacture every product with incredible accuracy and in exactly the same way. Many factories and manufacturing outlets employ semi-skilled and unskilled labour to operate these routers for their business.

Unlike manual lathes, these machines do not require skilled engineers. Despite their multifaceted functions, they’re typically used for cutting through solid wood – this is why they’re often known as wood routers. Like your portable router or hand plane, these machines too can take simple shallow cuts backed by multiple passes. They are fairly simple to understand, easy to operate and extremely functional.

But just like other mechanical equipment, CNC routers come with some disadvantages:

  • they tend to be extremely expensive (as in thousands of dollars, potentially up to $100,000 for higher-end models), particularly when compared with portable routers and other manually-operated cutting machines.
  • operating them requires you to be precise and know what you’re doing. If you set the feed rate of the router too low, it’ll lead to burns. At the same time, if you set the rate too high, it’ll cause chatter.
  • the router is likely to malfunction when the cut is too deep.

An operator of CNC router needs to be knowledgeable enough to choose from the various options like single, straight and spiral flute. Likewise, they might also have to choose between compression, up, and down cuts.

A cheaper and better CNC machine…

Considering the extravagant price tag and the long list of disadvantages, many ordinary consumers and manufacturers are looking towards cheaper, better solutions.

This is exactly where the DIY Smart Saw comes in.

Hi Scott. The astronomical cost of professional CNC routers is definitely a problem for me. I couldn’t find one for less than $4000 online. Crazy. I’ve been looking for a cheaper solution and this looks very interesting – I’ll be sure to let you know how things go in a few weeks. Great article!

Indeed Chester. The average Joe probably can’t afford something like that, and in that case the Smart Saw is a pretty damn good option. Let me know how you get along building it; if you have any questions I’ll do what I can to help.
